Construction projects must navigate a wide framework of legislation and rules. Foremost among these is the rapidly expanding, increasingly intricate suite of environmental laws and regulations. Understanding what these regimes require-and the consequences of failing to comply-is crucial for everyone involved in delivering construction schemes. When environmental matters emerge, they can influence the programme, cost, sequencing, and the methods adopted on site, so the overall impact can be substantial.

Climate change and construction


Climate change is a mounting and ever more significant consideration for the sector, not least because the Climate Change Act 2008 sets a net zero target, while both the UK government and private enterprises pursue their own net zero commitments. Parties are encouraged to incorporate ‘green’ or ‘net zero’ provisions in construction contracts and/or to adopt greener practices, such as assessing and cutting greenhouse gas emissions associated with building processes and the manufacture of materials. It operates to stay proceedings on terms that have been agreed. The provisions contained in the schedule may remain confidential.
