Updated in October 2025 Introduction China, formally the People’s Republic of China (PRC), became a sovereign nation in 1949 and is governed by a sole political party, the Communist Party of China (CPC). Covering roughly 9.6 million square kilometres, it is home to more than 1.4 billion people.
