What does Effective date of termination mean? The effective date of termination is the date the employment actually ends for legal purposes. It marks when statutory time limits start and when length-of-service-based rights and obligations stop or begin (for example, unfair dismissal, redundancy payments and restrictive covenants). In England & Wales and Scotland, it is a statutory term defined in the Employment Rights Act 1996, section 97.
