What does EC mean? In legal practice, “EC” is used as shorthand for two distinct concepts: 1. European Commission: The executive arm of the European Union. What is the EU Batteries Directive?

Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries, accumulators and their waste is intended to minimise environmental harm from batteries and waste batteries. Earlier EU rules did not adequately manage the risks from waste batteries or deliver a consistent EU-wide system for collection and recycling. In 2002, a Commission impact assessment showed that over 45% of portable batteries sold in the EU were landfilled or incinerated instead of being recycled. The Batteries Directive therefore repealed and replaced the following:
