EU legislation to control fluorinated greenhouse gases

The EU has put in place two legal instruments to curb F‑gas emissions:

  • The Mobile Air-Conditioning Systems (MAC) Directive 2006/40/EC, which bans F‑gases with a global warming potential exceeding 150 times that of carbon dioxide in new types of passenger cars and light vans from 2011, and in all newly produced cars and vans from 2017
  • Regulation (EU) No 517/2014 on fluorinated greenhouse gases (the EU F‑gas Regulation), which addresses all other principal uses of F‑gases
