Feed-in tariff definition

What does Feed-in tariff mean? A feed-in tariff is a payment mechanism under which small-scale low‑carbon generators are paid for each unit of electricity they generate and, separately, for electricity exported to the grid. In Great Britain, “Feed‑in Tariffs” (FIT) is a statutory scheme created under the Energy Act 2008 and secondary legislation, administered by Ofgem via supplier licence conditions. Key features include eligibility for technologies such as solar PV, wind, hydro, anaerobic digestion and micro‑CHP, with capacity generally up to 5 MW (2 kW for micro‑CHP), accreditation (typically via MCS or ROO‑FIT), metering requirements, index‑linked tariffs, and 20–25 year payment terms. ARCHIVED: This tracker has been archived and is not maintained.

The feed-in tariff (FiT) launched in April 2010 as the government’s principal policy to boost small-scale, low-carbon electricity generation across great britain (GB). It is underpinned by the Feed-in Tariffs Order 2012, SI 2012/2782 (as amended), alongside modifications to Conditions 33 and 34 of the standard conditions of electricity supply licences, i.e. the Standard Licence Conditions. The FiT is open to all—ranging from households to local authorities, landlords and businesses. Off-grid generators, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and confirm they will use all the power they produce, may access partial FiT payments; as no electricity is exported, they qualify only for the generation tariff.

Those who qualify for the FiT:

  • receive payments from certain licensed electricity suppliers (a FiT licensee) for each kilowatt hour (p/kWh) generated — the generation tariff
  • can sell any excess electricity to the National Grid — the export tariff
  • benefit from reduced energy bills, as they need to purchase less from the National Grid

The FiT scheme is closed to new accreditations...

This Practice Note This Practice Note reviews mechanisms used in settling litigation. A Tomlin order consists of a consent order paired with a schedule. It operates to stay proceedings on terms that have been agreed. The provisions contained in the schedule may remain confidential. This Practice Note describes the scope of confidentiality attaching to the schedule and sets out how it differs from a standard consent order. Sample wording for a Tomlin order is included, alongside links to precedents, as well as guidance on court approval. It also addresses varying, setting aside and enforcing a Tomlin order, including the considerations the court will take into account when handling applications for each. Further guidance is provided on interpreting and applying the relevant provisions of the CPR; however, some courts and divisions impose very specific requirements for both drafting and approval, and for approaching the schedule and confidentiality issues. Accordingly, you must consider the particular rules and court guide provisions in the forum where your claim is proceeding when drawing up the Tomlin order...
