Key definition
Gb definition

What does Gb mean? Gb is used in legal practice to express data capacity or speed in telecoms, cloud and IT procurement, and to estimate electronic disclosure volumes. By convention, Gb (lower-case b) means gigabit, equal to 1,000,000,000 bits. This differs from GB (capital B), which means gigabyte, equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes; there are 8 bits in a byte, so 1 GB = 8 Gb. The term is not defined in UK or Irish legislation or case law; it is a technical measurement adopted by contract drafters and industry standards (SI/IEC). For storage, some systems use binary units (gibibyte, GiB = 2^30 bytes), which can...

Mandatory energy labelling in the UK

In Great Britain (Gb) and Northern Ireland (NI), compulsory energy labelling is overseen by:

  • Energy Information Regulations 2011 (EIR 2011),
  • Energy Information (Amendment) Regulations 2018 (as applicable in GB), and
  • Assimilated Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 (2017 Regulation)

The framework operates differently in GB compared with NI. The regime is applied in distinct ways in each jurisdiction. For guidance on energy labelling within the GB ecodesign context, see these Practice Notes as follows:

  • GB Ecodesign of products—manufacturers, importers and authorised representatives
  • GB Ecodesign of products—offences, sanctions and enforcement
  • GB Ecodesign of products—product-specific requirements
  • GB Ecodesign of products—responsibilities of suppliers and dealers

Scope of the Regulations

EIR 2011 apply to energy-related products that:

  • affect energy consumption during use, and
  • are first placed on the market or put into service

EIR 2011 do not cover second-hand products, unless brought into GB from a third country, nor any means of transport for people or goods. The products to which the rules apply are listed in Schedule 1 of EIR 2011...

This Practice Note This Practice Note reviews mechanisms used in settling litigation. A Tomlin order consists of a consent order paired with a schedule. It operates to stay proceedings on terms that have been agreed. The provisions contained in the schedule may remain confidential. This Practice Note describes the scope of confidentiality attaching to the schedule and sets out how it differs from a standard consent order. Sample wording for a Tomlin order is included, alongside links to precedents, as well as guidance on court approval. It also addresses varying, setting aside and enforcing a Tomlin order, including the considerations the court will take into account when handling applications for each. Further guidance is provided on interpreting and applying the relevant provisions of the CPR; however, some courts and divisions impose very specific requirements for both drafting and approval, and for approaching the schedule and confidentiality issues. Accordingly, you must consider the particular rules and court guide provisions in the forum where your claim is proceeding when drawing up the Tomlin order...
