What does Ion mean? In legal and regulatory documents, ion is a scientific term describing an atom or molecule that carries a net electrical charge because it has lost or gained electrons. Positively charged ions are cations; negatively charged ions are anions. The concept commonly appears in environmental permitting and water/wastewater consents (for example, limits on ionic species such as nitrate, phosphate or chloride, and conductivity), waste and pollution control, technical schedules, expert reports, and contract specifications for ion exchange, ion chromatography and corrosion prevention. It is also relevant to product stewardship, waste management and carriage of dangerous goods for lithium‑ion batteries. Ion is...

The Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2012, SI 2012/3032 (the RoHS Regulations 2012), give effect to Directive 2011/65/EU on restricting the use of specified hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS 2). RoHS 2 superseded Directive 2002/95/EC, which had been transposed in the UK by the 2006 Regulations, SI 2006/1463, and subsequently by the 2008 Regulations, SI 2008/37 (together, the Original RoHS Regulations). Under the RoHS Regulations 2012, duties are placed on economic operators across the supply chain—such as manufacturers, importers and distributors—regarding the placing on the market and the making available of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). These Regulations took effect on 2 January 2013, replacing the Original RoHS Regulations. After IP completion day, the application of the RoHS Regulations 2012 differs as between GB and Northern Ireland. For further details, see the Brexit section below. This Practice Note concentrates on the Scope of the RoHS Regulations 2012 and addresses principal requirements and compliance. For additional information See the Brexit section for additional guidance. Accordingly, this Practice Note sets out the scope, highlights core obligations, and summarises key compliance for EEE supplied by manufacturers, importers or distributors. For...

This Practice Note This Practice Note reviews mechanisms used in settling litigation. A Tomlin order consists of a consent order paired with a schedule. It operates to stay proceedings on terms that have been agreed. The provisions contained in the schedule may remain confidential. This Practice Note describes the scope of confidentiality attaching to the schedule and sets out how it differs from a standard consent order. Sample wording for a Tomlin order is included, alongside links to precedents, as well as guidance on court approval. It also addresses varying, setting aside and enforcing a Tomlin order, including the considerations the court will take into account when handling applications for each. Further guidance is provided on interpreting and applying the relevant provisions of the CPR; however, some courts and divisions impose very specific requirements for both drafting and approval, and for approaching the schedule and confidentiality issues. Accordingly, you must consider the particular rules and court guide provisions in the forum where your claim is proceeding when drawing up the Tomlin order...
