What does Great Britain mean? In legal drafting and statutory contexts, Great Britain describes England, Wales and Scotland (including their smaller offshore islands), and excludes Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands). This Practice Note sets out the principal existing, planned and historic caps on domestic energy supply tariffs in great britain (GB). It provides detailed treatment of:

the government cap on standard variable and default tariffs introduced from 1 January 2019 under the Domestic Gas and Electricity (Tariff Cap) Act 2018; and
the cap on charges for customers with prepayment meters established by the Competition and Markets Authority, which has been within the scope of the Default Tariff Cap since 1 January 2021.
