Great Britain definition

What does Great Britain mean? In legal drafting and statutory contexts, Great Britain describes England, Wales and Scotland (including their smaller offshore islands), and excludes Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands). It is principally a geographical expression rather than a term of art. Many UK statutes and regulations use “Great Britain” to set territorial extent or application, and individual enactments may state expressly whether adjacent waters or specified islands are included. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a government programme in great britain offering payments to stimulate renewable heat deployment in a market still largely reliant on fossil fuels. By providing financial support, it aims to lower hurdles to uptake, such as high upfront capital costs and ongoing operating spend.

The scheme was delivered in two stages:

Phase 1, launched in November 2011, for non-domestic plant across the industrial, business and public sectors
Phase 2, covering the domestic RHI (following the Renewable Heat Premium Payment), introduced in April 2014 and intended to be open until 2021; however, the government’s Spring Budget 2020 extended the domestic RHI to March 2022
