What does Sponsor mean? In acquisition finance, the sponsor is the private equity fund or other institutional equity investor that leads the deal, commits and arranges the equity funding, and exercises strategic control over the bid vehicle (Bidco/Newco). It is a descriptive market term, not defined by legislation or case law, and is ordinarily defined in the relevant investment, acquisition and finance documents for the transaction (for example, “Sponsor” means a named fund and its affiliates).
