Infrastructure definition

What does Infrastructure mean? In legal practice, infrastructure describes assets and networks that provide essential or public services and the projects to procure, finance, construct, operate and maintain them. It is a descriptive term rather than a single defined legal concept; sectoral statutes and planning regimes define specific categories for particular purposes (for example, nationally significant infrastructure projects under the Planning Act 2008 in England and Wales; national or major developments in Scotland; regionally significant development in Northern Ireland; and strategic infrastructure development under Ireland’s Planning and Development Acts). Infrastructure across the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS) is intricate and tailored to the characteristics of each field. A web of connected pipelines carries Hydrocarbons either to shore or to an offshore loading point. Along the way, these streams are processed or refined before entering the National Transmission Service or being sold into the market.

Maps showing UK offshore infastructure

The following maps from the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), formerly the Oil & Gas Authority, help trace the path of individual fields to shore:

This Practice Note This Practice Note reviews mechanisms used in settling litigation. A Tomlin order consists of a consent order paired with a schedule. It operates to stay proceedings on terms that have been agreed. The provisions contained in the schedule may remain confidential. This Practice Note describes the scope of confidentiality attaching to the schedule and sets out how it differs from a standard consent order. Sample wording for a Tomlin order is included, alongside links to precedents, as well as guidance on court approval. It also addresses varying, setting aside and enforcing a Tomlin order, including the considerations the court will take into account when handling applications for each. Further guidance is provided on interpreting and applying the relevant provisions of the CPR; however, some courts and divisions impose very specific requirements for both drafting and approval, and for approaching the schedule and confidentiality issues. Accordingly, you must consider the particular rules and court guide provisions in the forum where your claim is proceeding when drawing up the Tomlin order...
