3G meaning

What does 3G mean?
In legal practice, 3G refers to third-generation mobile telecommunications networks and services, used in telecoms contracts, spectrum licences and regulatory documents to describe service capability, coverage and device compatibility. It is not a defined statutory term in the UK or Ireland; it is a descriptive industry expression aligned with the ITU’s IMT‑2000 family (including UMTS/HSPA). Typical uses include: specifying minimum service levels and coverage, defining permitted technologies in site and planning agreements, and setting roaming, interconnection and consumer service terms. Practical significance: 3G is now a legacy technology. Mobile operators in the UK and Ireland are progressively switching off 3G and refarming spectrum to 4G/5G under Ofcom/ComReg oversight. Contracts and policies should deal with technology sunsets, service migration, customer and wholesale notice, and impacts on continuity (including emergency services access, roaming and M2M/IoT devices). Usage is broadly consistent across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. References in official documents may appear as “3G”, “third‑generation”, “UMTS” or “IMT‑2000”. See IMT‑2000.
