Abatement (Pensions) meaning

What does Abatement (Pensions) mean?
Abatement (pensions) is the reduction, suspension or recovery of a public service pension when a retired member is re-employed, so that their pension plus re-employment pay does not exceed a set limit (commonly the pay used to calculate the pension, or the current rate for the relevant post). It is a scheme-specific rule used in re-employment/return-to-work cases across the Civil Service, NHS, Teachers’, Police, Firefighters’ and some Local Government pension schemes. The term is not defined in a single statute; the legal basis lies in each scheme’s regulations and employer or ministerial directions, with calculation methods, thresholds, monitoring periods and discretions (including waivers) varying. Across England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland the concept is broadly consistent, although some schemes have modified, relaxed or disapplied abatement for certain roles or periods. In Ireland, abatement is provided for under the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and Other Provisions) Act 2012 and Department of Public Expenditure circulars, generally capping combined remuneration at the appropriate rate for the job. Practically, pension abatement is a key consideration in retire-and-return planning: members and employers should check scheme regulations, obtain pay and pension projections, and ensure payroll can monitor and report earnings against the abatement cap.
