Accelerated Decommissioning Sites meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Accelerated Decommissioning Sites mean?
Accelerated decommissioning Sites describes nuclear-licensed sites that the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) prioritises to bring forward decommissioning milestones—such as hazard reduction, entry to Care and Maintenance, or progression to the final site end state—ahead of the baseline programme. The term is a descriptive planning label used in NDA strategies and contracting; it is not defined in legislation or case law. The NDA’s 2011/12 business plan first identified magnox stations at Bradwell and Trawsfynydd for acceleration. Subsequent NDA Strategies and annual Business Plans have continued to allocate funding and resources to enable earlier closure activities; Bradwell has since entered Care and Maintenance (2018), while Trawsfynydd is pursuing a continuous decommissioning approach within the Magnox programme. Legal significance includes: programme re-sequencing, ONR licence permissions, environmental permitting (Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA), planning and EIA consents, waste management route selection (LLW/ILW), and procurement under public sector rules, alongside socio‑economic duties under the Energy Act 2004. Usage is consistent across England & Wales and Scotland; Northern Ireland and Ireland have no Magnox stations, so the term is used there only descriptively for comparable decommissioning contexts.
