AP1400 meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does AP1400 mean?
In legal and commercial documents, AP1400 is commonly used to denote kepco/KHNP’s APR-1400 pressurised water reactor (pwr) technology, identified as the vendor’s standard nuclear power plant design. It is an industry descriptor, not a term defined in UK or Irish legislation or case law. The APR-1400 is deployed in South Korea and at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant (Abu Dhabi, UAE), providing a reference plant for due diligence, bankability assessments, performance guarantees and supply-chain contracts. References to AP1400/APR-1400 typically appear in EPC and O&M agreements, technology licensing, nuclear site procurement, and regulatory submissions. In Great Britain, any proposed deployment would be subject to the UK nuclear regulatory regime, including Generic Design Assessment (ONR with the Environment Agency and, where relevant, SEPA/NRW), a nuclear site licence, environmental permits and planning consent. Usage and meaning are consistent across England & Wales and Scotland, though policy and permitting bodies differ. Northern Ireland has no civil nuclear generation. In Ireland, construction of nuclear fission electricity plants is prohibited by statute, so the term arises only in comparative or cross-border contexts.
