Bytes meaning

What does Bytes mean?
In legal practice, a byte is the basic unit used to quantify digital information, underpinning file sizes, disclosure datasets, digital evidence, court e-filing limits, and storage or bandwidth commitments in IT and cloud contracts. A byte equals 8 bits. It is often approximated as “one character”, which is generally true for ASCII text; however, many characters (for example, in UTF-8/Unicode or emojis) use more than one byte. The term is not generally defined in UK or Irish legislation or case law and is used descriptively across data protection, cybersecurity, telecoms and procedural contexts. Usage is consistent across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. When drafting or interpreting contracts and policies, specify the unit system: decimal (kB=1,000 bytes; MB=1,000,000 bytes; GB=1,000,000,000 bytes) or binary (KiB=1,024 bytes; MiB=1,048,576 bytes; GiB=1,073,741,824 bytes). This can affect storage calculations, fees, service credits and compliance thresholds. Related practice points: record dataset sizes for disclosure/eDisclosure (eDiscovery) and breach notification; verify whether size limits in court or regulator portals are expressed in MB/GB; ensure technical schedules and SLAs define bytes and derived units.
