Closed-circuit Television meaning

What does Closed-circuit Television mean?
In legal practice, closed-circuit television (CCTV) means a surveillance system in which cameras transmit images to a restricted set of monitors or recorders, rather than for public broadcast. It is widely used by public authorities, businesses, landlords and employers for security, crime prevention and premises management. “CCTV” is a descriptive term rather than a single statutory definition, though related legislation refers to “surveillance camera systems”. Operation of CCTV typically engages data protection and privacy law: in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland under the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018; in Ireland under the EU GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018. Controllers must identify a lawful basis, ensure necessity and proportionality, provide clear signage and privacy information, set retention periods, secure footage, and handle data subject access requests. In England and Wales, relevant authorities must have regard to the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Scotland and Northern Ireland have no equivalent code but the same data protection and Human Rights Act 1998/ECHR principles apply. In Ireland, the DPC issues guidance and Garda community CCTV schemes are governed by the Garda Síochána Act 2005. UK CMA £4m fines for freelancer pay collusion: labour market competition law risks for HR, recruiters and agencies on information sharing, no-poach and wage-fixing, compliance training and enforcement
