Condenser meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Condenser mean?
In legal practice, a condenser is the power‑station heat exchanger that cools exhaust steam from a turbine below boiling point so it becomes water for reuse in the steam cycle. In pressurised water reactors (typical in the UK), the condensate is returned to the steam generator; in boiling water reactors, to the reactor core. The removed heat is carried by a circulating water system and rejected to the environment via cooling towers or direct discharge to a river, estuary or sea. The term is descriptive rather than defined in legislation, but is routinely used in planning, environmental permitting and nuclear licensing to frame requirements on cooling‑water abstraction and thermal discharges. Regulation across the UK and Ireland is broadly consistent: - England and Wales: Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 for discharges; separate abstraction licensing; marine licensing where relevant. - Scotland: Controlled Activities Regulations for water abstractions/discharges; Electricity Act consents for generating stations. - Northern Ireland: Pollution Prevention and Control regime and water abstraction/discharge consents. - Ireland: EPA Industrial Emissions licensing and water abstraction/discharge controls. Typical issues include thermal plume and temperature limits, fish entrainment/impingement controls, biocide dosing, once‑through versus closed‑cycle cooling, and EIA/Habitats Regulations assessments tied to condenser and cooling‑system design.
