DDA compliance meaning

What does DDA compliance mean?
In legal and construction practice, “DDA compliance” describes ensuring buildings, workplaces and services are accessible to disabled people and that disability discrimination risks are managed in design, construction and refurbishment projects. The phrase is a descriptive shorthand rather than a defined legal term. In Great Britain (England & Wales and Scotland) the substantive duties now arise chiefly under the Equality Act 2010 (which replaced most of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995), together with building regulations (e.g. Approved Document M and the Scottish Technical Handbooks) and standards such as BS 8300. In Northern Ireland, the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 remains the principal anti-discrimination statute. In Ireland, equivalent obligations derive from the disability Act 2005, the Equal Status Acts and Building Regulations Part M; “DDA compliance” is not a statutory label there. Typical usage covers: meeting or exceeding Part M/Technical Handbook requirements; avoiding discrimination in employment and the provision of services and premises; and making reasonable adjustments. Compliance with building regulations may not, by itself, satisfy equality law duties, so access audits, design reviews and contractual allocation of responsibilities (e.g. in building contracts, leases and professional appointments) are common. The term often appears in development agreements, fit-out specifications and legal due diligence.
