Dose rate meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Dose rate mean?
In legal practice, dose rate describes how quickly ionising radiation dose is received or present at a location, used when advising on occupational exposure, area classification, shielding and time limits. It is the quotient of dose and time, typically expressed in sieverts per hour (Sv/h), including mSv/h or μSv/h. Legacy or non-UK materials may refer to rem per hour (1 Sv = 100 rem). The term is a technical expression used throughout radiation protection law and guidance rather than a stand‑alone statutory definition. In Great Britain, the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and HSE guidance rely on dose rate for risk assessment, designation of controlled/supervised areas, local rules, signage, emergency planning and demonstration of ALARP. Northern Ireland has materially similar provisions. In Ireland, the Basic Safety Standards regulations implementing Directive 2013/59/Euratom adopt the same concept and SI units. Practically, measured or predicted dose rates inform access controls, work duration, shielding requirements, monitoring and training in sectors such as medical, nuclear and industrial radiography. Contracts, permits and regulator interactions commonly reference dose rate to evidence compliance with exposure limits and dose constraints, and to justify operational controls. Usage is broadly consistent across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland.
