A dosimeter (often “
dosemeter” in UK legislation) is a device used to measure a person’s exposure to ionising radiation, recording the
absorbed dose; the measurement is used to assess equivalent/effective dose for compliance with statutory dose limits. In practice, personal dosimeters (whole‑body, extremity or eye‑lens) and area/environmental dosimeters are worn or deployed in workplaces such as hospitals, nuclear sites and industrial radiography.
UK law (Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the Northern Ireland 2017 equivalent) uses the term and requires monitoring by Approved Dosimetry Services, maintenance of dose records and investigation of overexposures. Irish law (2019 regulations implementing the Basic Safety Standards Directive) provides similar duties. The term is descriptive rather than separately defined; its legal significance lies in demonstrating occupational exposure, determining classified persons, informing health surveillance, and evidencing compliance or breach in regulatory enforcement and personal injury claims.
Usage and meaning are consistent across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland, noting only the spelling variant “dosemeter” in legislation.
