Dosimetry meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Dosimetry mean?
In legal practice, dosimetry refers to the measurement, calculation and recording of ionising radiation doses, used to demonstrate compliance with radiation protection duties and to evidence exposure in regulatory and civil contexts. It determines the absorbed dose in matter and human tissue resulting from exposure to ionising radiation, and commonly includes assessment of equivalent and effective dose for both external and internal exposures. While “dosimetry” itself is generally a descriptive scientific term rather than a defined legal term, related concepts (for example dose limits, dose records and approved dosimetry services) are defined and regulated under ionising radiation legislation. Dosimetry underpins employer duties on exposure monitoring, dose investigation and record‑keeping; regulatory enforcement by HSE/ONR (and HSENI); medical exposure governance; and nuclear and environmental permitting. It is routinely relied upon as expert evidence in personal injury, industrial disease and clinical negligence claims, and in regulatory prosecutions. Across England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland, usage is broadly consistent. Regulators recognise accredited/approved dosimetry services and require retention of dose records for specified periods. Practically, dosimetry may involve personal and area monitoring, bioassay, retrospective dose reconstruction and uncertainty analysis, all aimed at establishing demonstrable compliance with dose constraints and limits and supporting defensible legal decision‑making.
