What does EARWG mean?
EARWG (environment Agencies requirements Working group) is a UK nuclear‑industry forum through which environmental regulators and nuclear operators share and test good practice to support compliance with environmental permits/authorisations for radioactive waste. It is not defined in legislation or case law; it is a descriptive term used in regulatory practice. Its work focuses on: (a) minimisation, re‑use and recycling of solid radioactive waste (low level waste (LLW) and very low level waste (VLLW)) across the industry; and (b) monitoring/assay of radioactive wastes (solid, liquid and gaseous). By collating and sharing techniques and evidence, EARWG promotes transparency in the information used by sites to meet Additional Information and Improvement Requirements (AIIRs) set in permits/authorisations. In England, Scotland and Wales, these requirements arise under environmental permits/authorisations issued by the Environment Agency (EA), the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW). In Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) regulates radioactive substances activities. Usage of EARWG is broadly consistent across the UK; it is not generally used in Ireland.
