EDF meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does EDF mean?
In legal practice, EDF refers to Électricité de France S.A., the French state‑owned energy group and a frequent counterparty in UK and Irish energy projects, regulation and disputes. The term is descriptive rather than defined in legislation or case law. In Great Britain, EDF operates through EDF Energy and affiliates as an electricity generator and supplier, nuclear developer and renewables investor. It owns and operates parts of the UK civil nuclear fleet and is constructing Hinkley Point C under a Contract for Difference; the proposed Sizewell C project is being advanced under the Nuclear Energy (Financing) Act 2022 regulated asset base model. Relevant regulation includes Ofgem licensing, nuclear site licences issued by the Office for Nuclear Regulation, and environmental permits from the Environment Agency, SEPA and NRW; merger control may engage the CMA. In Ireland and Northern Ireland, EDF participates in the Single Electricity Market through trading and renewables subsidiaries; regulation is by the CRU, the Utility Regulator and the SEM Committee. Usage of the term is consistent across England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. In France, EDF operates 56 nuclear reactors on 18 sites; its first‑generation graphite‑moderated gas‑cooled (UNGG) reactors (1958–1966) are shut and being decommissioned.
