Electron meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Electron mean?
In legal practice, “electron” is a scientific term used across energy regulation, electrical safety, product liability, patents, electronic communications, and nuclear/radiation matters to explain the physical basis of electricity and ionising radiation. It is not generally defined in UK or Irish legislation or case law; tribunals, regulators and courts apply its ordinary scientific meaning, typically through expert evidence and technical standards. An electron is a fundamental subatomic particle carrying a negative electric charge. In atoms, electrons occupy orbitals around the nucleus; they can also exist freely, for example as the charge carriers in an electric current or as beta radiation. Practical relevance includes: establishing causation in electrical injury and fire claims; demonstrating compliance and due diligence for electrical equipment and electromagnetic compatibility; drafting and construing semiconductor and materials patent claims; assessing radiological protection and nuclear licensing; and interpreting statutory and contractual references to electricity, electronic data or ionising radiation. Usage and meaning are broadly consistent across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland.
