EMITS meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does EMITS mean?
EMITS (Examination, maintenance, inspection and Test Schedule) describes the structured schedule used in nuclear practice to plan and evidence the examinations, maintenance, inspections and tests required to keep safety‑critical plant and systems capable of performing their claimed safety functions. It is not a statutory term, but a widely used industry/assurance expression (also seen as “Testing”) aligned with the UK nuclear site licence regime and forms a core element of the nuclear safety case and site compliance arrangements. In England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, EMITS is typically used by ONR‑licensed sites to demonstrate compliance with site licence conditions (notably Licence Condition 28 on examination, inspection, maintenance and testing), and to substantiate safety case claims of operability and reliability. Key features usually include: identification of safety functions and systems; specified intervals and acceptance criteria; roles and responsibilities; configuration control; management of deferrals and non‑conformances; and records to support regulatory inspection and audit. Usage in Ireland is broadly analogous for radiological and high‑hazard installations, although terminology and regulatory references differ; the term remains descriptive rather than legislative. Practically, an EMITS underpins assurance, ALARP demonstrations and regulatory confidence that safety systems will operate as required when demanded.
