What does Enriched Uranium mean?
In legal practice, enriched uranium is uranium whose proportion of the fissile isotope uranium‑235 (U‑235) has been increased above its natural level of about 0.7% by isotope‑separation processes (for example, gas centrifuge). It is treated as nuclear material and is subject to stringent licensing, nuclear safeguards (accountancy and reporting), physical security, transport and export‑control requirements because of its proliferation risk. The term is a widely used technical description across nuclear regulation and export controls rather than a single, standalone statutory definition. Specific instruments and control lists may define or classify enriched uranium by U‑235 content, commonly distinguishing low‑enriched uranium (below 20% U‑235) and high‑enriched uranium (20% or more), with regulatory obligations typically increasing with enrichment level. In England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, usage is consistent across UK nuclear law and guidance administered by the Office for Nuclear Regulation, including domestic safeguards legislation and export control measures. In Ireland, usage aligns with Euratom safeguards and EU export control law, overseen nationally by the Environmental Protection Agency/Office of Radiological Protection.
