Free-to-air services meaning

What does Free-to-air services mean?
In legal practice, free-to-air services are television or radio channels transmitted unencrypted so that anyone with standard receiving equipment (for example, a TV aerial, satellite dish or radio) can receive them without a subscription or other conditional access. In the UK, viewing live television still generally requires a TV licence, but the service itself is not pay-TV or subscription-based. The expression is a commonly used industry and regulatory term rather than a single, uniformly defined statutory concept. UK legislation and Ofcom guidance often distinguish free-to-air from encrypted or conditional access services (for example, in carriage, prominence and sports “listed events” contexts). In Ireland, the broadcasting Act 2009 uses the concept within must-offer and must-carry frameworks for public service broadcasting. Usage and meaning are broadly consistent across England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Key features include: unencrypted broadcast; no subscription or decoder requirement; reception by the general public via platforms such as Freeview, Freesat and Saorview; and funding typically through public funding/licence fee and/or advertising. The status of a service as free-to-air is relevant to broadcast rights exploitation (including sports rights windows), carriage and retransmission negotiations, EPG prominence, and compliance with public service and access obligations.

A bank loan is treated as a non-performing loan (NPL) if more than 90 days pass without the borrower making the agreed instalments or interest payments.
