GC Works meaning

What does GC Works mean?
GC Works refers to a historic suite of government‑drafted standard form construction contracts used in legal practice for public sector building and civil engineering projects. The term is descriptive rather than defined in legislation or case law. Issued by government (originally through the Department of the environment and later the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, including Property Advisers to the Civil Estate), the suite included GC/Works/1 (with and without quantities), design and build variants, minor works and subcontract forms. Key features follow traditional lump‑sum or measurement procurement, with detailed provisions on design responsibility (where applicable), variations, extensions of time, loss and expense, quality, defects, security and dispute resolution (typically arbitration or litigation). The forms are no longer maintained and have largely been superseded in UK public procurement by the NEC suite and, in some contexts, JCT; in Ireland, by the Public Works Contracts. They are still encountered on legacy projects and final account disputes. Older editions pre‑date statutory payment and adjudication regimes, so parties commonly amend them to comply with the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 (England & Wales and Scotland), the Construction Contracts (Northern Ireland) Order 1997, and Ireland’s Construction Contracts Act 2013, as well as...
