GC Works refers to a historic suite of government‑drafted standard form construction contracts used in legal practice for public sector building and civil engineering projects. The term is descriptive rather than defined in legislation or case law. Issued by government (originally through the Department of the environment and later the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, including Property Advisers to the Civil Estate), the suite included GC/Works/1 (with and without quantities), design and build variants, minor works and subcontract forms. Key features follow traditional lump‑sum or measurement procurement, with detailed provisions on design responsibility (where applicable), variations, extensions of time, loss and expense, quality, defects, security and dispute resolution (typically arbitration or litigation).
