GEO meaning

What does GEO mean?
In satellite and telecoms contracts, licensing and regulatory filings, GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) refers to satellites operating in the geostationary-satellite orbit approximately 35,786 km above the equator, matching Earth’s rotation so the satellite appears fixed over one longitude. The term is descriptive rather than defined in UK or Irish statute, though the ITU Radio Regulations define the geostationary-satellite orbit (GSO); GEO/GSO are used interchangeably in practice. Key legal features include allocation and coordination of orbital slots and radio spectrum, ITU filings, and national authorisations. In the UK (England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland), Ofcom manages spectrum/licensing interfaces, and space activities are licensed principally under the Outer Space Act 1986 and, where applicable, the Space Industry Act 2018, alongside Wireless Telegraphy Act authorisations for earth stations. In Ireland, ComReg manages spectrum and ITU coordination for GEO networks, with national authorisations for earth stations and services. Contracts and policies commonly reference GEO when addressing coverage footprints, latency characteristics, station‑keeping and fuel, interference management, in‑orbit delivery and insurance, end‑of‑life disposal to a graveyard orbit, and space debris mitigation. Usage and meaning are broadly consistent across the UK and Ireland; differences are mainly procedural, reflecting regulator‑specific processes.

Site characterisation is generally carried out in a clear staged manner: screening phase: an initial investigation consisting of a desk study phase 1: a site walkover and qualitative risk assessment phase 2: intrusive site investigations involving the analysis of soil, groundwater and/or gas samples and a quantitative risk assessment For further information on desktop studies and phase 1 assessments, see Practice Note: Environmental investigations—types of searches...
