Heat Exchanger meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Heat Exchanger mean?
A heat exchanger is an item of plant that transfers heat between two media (usually fluids) without direct mixing, typically across tubes or plates. In legal practice across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland, this is descriptive engineering terminology rather than a term defined in legislation or case law, but it is frequently specified in contracts, safety cases and permits. Key legal considerations include: classification as pressure equipment; conformity assessment and marking (UK: Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and UKCA/CE marking; Ireland: European Union measures implementing the Pressure Equipment Directive); in‑service inspection and written schemes of examination (UK: Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000; Ireland: Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations); design codes, materials selection, corrosion/fouling, leak integrity, hazardous substances, and performance guarantees (duty, approach temperature, efficiency). In nuclear facilities, steam generators and condensers are heat exchangers: they transfer heat from the reactor cooling system (primary circuit) to a separate water/steam circuit that drives the turbine‑generator, maintaining segregation to prevent radioactive contamination. Contract and licensing documents commonly address isolation, leak detection, testing and maintenance. Usage and legal treatment are broadly consistent across the UK and Ireland. Project documentation should identify each unit’s duty, pressure rating, contents and regulatory compliance.
