High-performance radio local area network meaning

What does High-performance radio local area network mean?
A high-performance radio local area network (HIPERLAN) describes an ETSI wireless LAN technology operating in the 5 GHz radio band, originally supporting data rates up to about 54 Mbit/s. In legal practice, the term appears in telecoms regulation, IT procurement and outsourcing contracts, property/fit-out specifications and regulatory due diligence to identify 5 GHz RLAN equipment or services built to ETSI HiperLAN standards. It is not generally a defined term in UK or Irish legislation; regulators typically refer to RLAN or WAS/RLAN. Use and operation of such networks in the 5 GHz band are usually licence-exempt but subject to technical conditions (for example, power limits and dynamic frequency selection/transmit power control) set by Ofcom in the UK and ComReg in Ireland, with broadly consistent treatment across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. HiperLAN is largely superseded by IEEE 802.11 variants (for example 802.11a/n/ac/axe). Where the term appears in legacy documentation, ensure equipment conformity (UKCA/CE), spectrum compliance and security obligations are met, and consider specifying current 5 GHz RLAN standards or “equivalent or better” to avoid unintended constraints.
