Issued for construction (IFC) meaning

What does Issued for construction (IFC) mean?
In construction projects, “issued for construction” (ifc) marks drawings and other design documents that the contractor may rely on to build the works. It is an industry term, not defined by legislation or case law; its legal effect depends on the construction contract (for example, JCT or NEC) and any stated document hierarchy. IFC documents are usually prepared by the design team and issued—often via the employer’s agent/contract administrator—on the client’s behalf once the design is sufficiently developed and, where applicable, reviewed or approved by relevant authorities and client team members (“approved for construction”). They may still be superseded by instructions, variations and RFIs, and do not represent the final as-built record. Usage is broadly consistent across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland: in the UK, IFC status typically follows planning and building control stages; in Ireland it aligns with BC(A)R processes but does not itself amount to compliance certification. Practically, an IFC issue signals a design freeze for procurement and fabrication, supports contractor reliance and allocation of design responsibility, and is often referenced in programmes, information-release schedules and payment milestones. Only documents incorporated as contract documents are binding, notwithstanding any IFC stamp.
