KI03 meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does KI03 mean?
KI03 (potassium iodate, commonly written KIO3) is a stable iodine tablet used in nuclear and radiological emergency planning to reduce thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine. In legal practice it features in emergency preparedness, stockpiling and distribution arrangements, and public information duties for nuclear sites and radiation incidents. The term itself is not defined in statute; UK and Irish legislation refers generally to “stable iodine.” In England & Wales and Scotland, the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2019 (REPPIR 2019) require dutyholders and local authorities to plan for making stable iodine available as a protective action; the choice between potassium iodate and potassium iodide (KI) is operational and guided by health authorities. Northern Ireland has equivalent REPPIR provisions. In Ireland, national nuclear emergency plans (coordinated by the EPA with the HSE) provide for pre-distribution or rapid distribution of iodine tablets, typically potassium iodate. Key legal points: inclusion in off-site emergency plans; procurement, storage and shelf‑life control; clear dosing and activation criteria; coordination with sheltering/evacuation and food controls; and accurate public communications. Administration occurs only when advised by the competent authorities. Usage and legal treatment are broadly consistent across the UK and Ireland.
