CASE STUDY

“It's hard to quantify, right now. But at a guess, I'd say it's probably more than 50% faster, at times. It's literally that quick. We've found to be an essential practical tool. We're very satisfied.”

Last mile meaning

What does Last mile mean?
In telecoms, the last mile is the final segment of an electronic communications network linking the provider’s access network to an end-user premises (e.g. the copper local loop, fibre-to-the-premises or a coaxial drop). It is an industry descriptor, not a defined statutory term, and refers to the access segment rather than network topology or ownership. Legally, it is relevant to: wholesale access and unbundling obligations on operators with significant market power (e.g. Openreach), including virtual/physical unbundled access and duct-and-pole access; service-level, installation and fault-repair commitments; wayleaves, easements and rights under the Electronic Communications Code (UK) and the Irish transposition of the European Electronic Communications Code; street works and permitting; and issues in state aid and universal service. Across England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Ofcom regulates last-mile access under the Communications Act 2003 and market-review remedies; in Ireland, ComReg applies analogous obligations under the Communications Regulation Acts and the 2022 Code Regulations. Usage is broadly consistent across these jurisdictions.
