Magnox Ltd meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Magnox Ltd mean?
In practice, Magnox Ltd refers to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)-owned site licence company (slc/site licensee) that holds the nuclear site licences for 12 Magnox and research sites in Great Britain, including the former rsrl research sites at Harwell and Winfrith. As SLC under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965, its licences are granted and regulated by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). It is responsible for nuclear safety, decommissioning, and radioactive waste management at: Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd, Wylfa, Harwell and Winfrith. The term is a descriptive expression used across UK nuclear regulatory, commercial and projects work to identify the licensed entity that contracts, holds permits and consents, and bears statutory duties and liabilities. It is commonly referenced in sale and purchase agreements, decommissioning contracts, waste management arrangements, insurance, indemnities and due diligence. Usage is consistent across England & Wales and Scotland (ONR licensing applies GB‑wide, with environmental permitting by the EA/NRW/SEPA as applicable). Northern Ireland and Ireland have no Magnox sites; references there are descriptive only of the GB licensee and its role.
