Mass number meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does Mass number mean?
In legal practice, mass number is used in forensic and technical evidence to specify which isotope of a chemical element is under discussion, for example in radioactive substances regulation, nuclear safeguards, environmental permitting, product compliance and patent specifications. It is a scientific descriptor rather than a defined legal term, and is applied consistently across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Mass number is the total number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus of an atom (symbol A). It distinguishes isotopes of the same element and is commonly paired with the atomic number (Z) to identify a nuclide (for example, carbon‑14, A = 14). While it does not alter chemical identity, it is central to radioactivity, half‑life and mass, and therefore to the classification, licensing, carriage and disposal of radioactive material, and to interpreting laboratory and expert reports. Practically, lawyers encounter mass numbers in expert evidence, regulatory notifications, safety data, and patent claims for isotopically labelled compounds. The term is widely used across legislation, guidance and standards but is not generally defined in statute or case law.
