National Waste Research Forum meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does National Waste Research Forum mean?
An industry collaboration, led by Site Licence Companies (SLCs) principally within the UK civil nuclear and radioactive waste management sector, used to share and coordinate research and development priorities, risks and opportunities on waste generation, treatment, storage and disposal. The National Waste Research Forum is not a statutory body and is not defined in legislation or case law; it is a descriptive term used in environmental and nuclear regulatory practice. For legal practitioners, forum outputs (programmes, summaries and technical positions) may inform advice on environmental permitting, radioactive waste duties, decommissioning, procurement specifications, contract risk allocation, intellectual property and confidentiality, and regulatory engagement. They can provide sector evidence when justifying BAT/BPM/ALARP, waste minimisation and innovation deployment in safety cases and permit applications. Across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the term is understood consistently in the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) estate and its supply chain, in dealings with the Environment Agency, SEPA, Natural Resources Wales and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. In Ireland, the expression is not a formal designation and any reliance should be cross-checked against EPA guidance and local permitting frameworks. Practically, the forum aligns common R&D needs, reduces duplication and helps de-risk technology adoption across multiple projects.
