Network access server meaning

What does Network access server mean?
In telecoms and IT contracts, a network access server (NAS) is the gateway device that terminates users’ access connections (traditionally dial-up over the public telephone network, but also other access technologies) and links them to an IP network. Where it handles analogue lines, it incorporates modems to convert analogue to digital signals. Functionally, it authenticates and authorises users, starts and routes sessions, allocates IP addresses and logs session data, typically producing accounting records (for example via RADIUS). This is a descriptive technical term rather than a defined legal term; it is not generally defined in UK or Irish legislation or case law. It is commonly referenced in telecommunications service agreements, technical schedules, regulatory correspondence and expert evidence. Its legal significance includes being a primary source of connection and traffic data for data retention and subscriber attribution, and a control point for lawful interception, security and resilience obligations, incident response and service levels (for example, under the Communications Act 2003 and Ofcom’s General Conditions in the UK, and Irish electronic communications rules). Usage and meaning are broadly consistent across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

To address these issues, Broadcom offered: guaranteed access to the interoperability application programming interfaces, as well as the materials, tools and technical support required for developing and certifying third-party FC HBAs; a commitment to ensure interoperability with VMware’s server virtualisation software,...
