Network provided (NP) number meaning

What does Network provided (NP) number mean?
The network provided (NP) number is the calling line identification (CLI) value inserted by the originating telecommunications network and carried with the call. It is used for routing, billing, caller traceability and, where validated, presentation to the called party. In practice, the NP number may populate either or both standard CLI fields: the Network Number (used within and between networks for routing/traceback) and a validated presentation number (the number shown to the recipient, such as a switchboard line). This is an industry and regulatory expression rather than a statutory definition, but it is used in Ofcom guidance and General Conditions (notably on CLI facilities and accuracy) in the UK, and in ComReg rules implementing EU user‑rights regulations in Ireland. Providers must supply CLI, validate any presented number as valid, dialable and used with the caller’s authority, and take steps to prevent invalid or spoofed CLIs. The NP number cannot be withheld from emergency services; any withholding applies only to presentation. Usage and legal effect are broadly consistent across England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. The NP number is significant in nuisance call and fraud investigations, enforcement, contractual disputes about call origination, and compliance with PECR/GDPR where CLI data are processed.
