CASE STUDY

“It's hard to quantify, right now. But at a guess, I'd say it's probably more than 50% faster, at times. It's literally that quick. We've found to be an essential practical tool. We're very satisfied.”

NNA meaning

Published by a LexisNexis Energy expert
What does NNA mean?
NNA refers to the National Nuclear Archive, used in legal practice to describe the central repository for longterm preservation and access to records from the UK civil nuclear sector. It is a descriptive term rather than one defined in legislation or case law. The facility, funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), is located in Wick, Caithness, Scotland, and opened in 2017 as “Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives”. NNA is often used interchangeably with “Nucleus”. Legal professionals encounter the NNA in matters involving records retention, disclosure and evidence management for litigation, arbitration and public inquiries; regulatory investigations and compliance (e.g. Office for Nuclear Regulation, Environment Agency, SEPA, Natural Resources Wales); and information rights (Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Environmental Information Regulations 2004). Contracts relating to decommissioning and site closure may specify transfer of records to the NNA. Across England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, usage is broadly consistent within the nuclear decommissioning context. The term is not generally used in Irish law, but Irish practitioners may see it in cross‑border disputes, regulatory cooperation, or disclosure where UK nuclear operators are involved.
