Offsetting strategy meaning

What does Offsetting strategy mean?
In practice, an offsetting strategy is the parties’ agreed plan for how the company will use verified carbon credits within a broader decarbonisation pathway. It is a descriptive contractual expression, not generally defined in UK or Irish legislation or case law, and is used consistently across England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland in supply, finance and procurement contracts and climate transition plans. An offsetting strategy typically specifies: - the verified credits, from a recognised offset provider and eligible standard/registry, that the Company may use to offset its residual emissions; - the pathway and timeline to transition from credits arising from avoidance or reduction projects to credits from greenhouse gas removals with long‑term, durable storage and low reversal risk; - how the Company will minimise reliance on credits by reducing its Residual Emissions to zero, or by a stated percentage, by 2050 (with any interim targets, governance, verification and reporting); - the expected impact of the relevant offsetting projects on a just transition and wider social and ecological goals. Its practical significance lies in setting quality criteria, controls on procurement, retirement and tracking of credits, and accountability for achieving net zero commitments while prioritising real emissions reductions over offsets.
