Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) meaning

What does Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) mean?
In legal practice, the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) is the UK industry body representing workplace/occupational pension schemes and their service providers. Practitioners most commonly encounter it through its annually updated Stewardship and Voting Guidelines and related corporate governance materials, which many trustees and asset managers adopt or use as benchmarks when setting stewardship policies, exercising shareholder voting at UK AGMs, and drafting Statements of Investment Principles and implementation statements. Formerly the national association of pension funds (napf), the term is not defined in legislation or case law; it is a descriptive reference to this trade association. PLSA materials are not legally binding but are widely treated as good practice and are frequently cited in regulatory consultations and in advice on fiduciary duties, ESG integration, disclosure and scheme governance. The PLSA also engages with government and regulators (e.g., DWP, The Pensions Regulator and the FCA) and administers initiatives such as the Pensions Quality Mark for DC schemes. Usage is broadly consistent across England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In Ireland, the Irish Association of Pension funds (IAPF) is the primary counterpart; PLSA guidance may nonetheless be used as persuasive industry commentary.
