Private business radio meaning

What does Private business radio mean?
Private business radio is a two-way radio service used by businesses and public sector bodies for their own operational communications, using organisation-installed base stations, repeaters and handheld/mobile units to provide on-site or local/wide-area coverage for voice and short data messaging. The expression is descriptive rather than a defined statutory term, but it aligns with the Business Radio licensing regime administered by Ofcom in the UK and Private Mobile Radio (PMR) licensing by ComReg in Ireland. Key legal features: use of licensed radio spectrum; operation only for the licensee’s internal purposes (not offered to the public); compliance with technical parameters, interference management and licence conditions (including equipment standards and any coordination/sharing obligations). In the UK (England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland), authorisation is under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006 via Ofcom Business Radio licences (e.g., Simple UK, Simple Site, Technically Assigned or Area Defined). In Ireland, ComReg issues PMR licences under the Wireless Telegraphy Acts. Practical issues for lawyers include spectrum licensing and renewals, procurement and maintenance contracts, site access/wayleaves and planning for masts, data protection and security of communications, and lawful interception/retention compliance.
