What does Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive mean?
A historical reference to the former EU framework governing the placing on the market of radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment. In practice, “Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive” (R&TTE Directive) refers to Directive 1999/5/EC, which set essential requirements on health and safety, electromagnetic compatibility and efficient use of the radio spectrum, and required conformity assessment and CE marking with mutual recognition across the EEA. The term is defined in legislation (Directive 1999/5/EC) but the Directive was repealed and replaced by the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU (RED). The R&TTE regime was implemented in the UK by the 2000 Regulations and superseded by the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017. In Great Britain, the 2017 Regulations (as retained EU law) now apply, with UKCA/CE marking requirements as applicable. In Northern Ireland, the EU RED applies under the Windsor Framework. In Ireland, RED is implemented by national regulations. Typical usage is in legacy contracts, product compliance clauses and technical documentation. For current regulatory compliance and market access, references to the R&TTE Directive should be read as, or updated to, the RED or the UK Radio Equipment Regulations 2017, unless a savings or transitional provision applies.
