RADSAFE is the UK nuclear industry’s mutual‑aid transport emergency response scheme for incidents involving radioactive material in transit. It provides a 24/7 single point of contact to mobilise specialist advice and, where needed, on‑scene assistance to emergency services, consignors and carriers after road or rail accidents, spillages or package damage. The term is not defined in legislation or case law; it is an industry expression used in transport emergency plans, contracts and compliance documentation.
Participation in RADSAFE helps dutyholders evidence practical emergency arrangements required under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations (implementing ADR) and relevant radiation protection law. It supplements, but does not replace, each consignor’s and carrier’s legal responsibilities for emergency planning, notifications, public protection and liaison with responders.
Usage and expectations are broadly consistent across England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, where transport of radioactive material is regulated (in Great Britain) by the Office for Nuclear Regulation and (in Northern Ireland) by HSENI. For movements to or within Ireland, regulation sits with the Environmental Protection Agency (Office of Radiological Protection); practitioners should confirm whether RADSAFE coverage or equivalent arrangements apply to the specific consignment and route.
