Register of Crofts meaning

What does Register of Crofts mean?
In Scottish crofting practice, the Register of Crofts is the public administrative roll kept by the Crofting Commission. It records each croft’s location, occupier (tenant or owner‑occupier crofter), landlord, rent and key regulatory particulars. Established under the Crofters (Scotland) Act 1993, it sits alongside—but is distinct from—the map‑based Crofting Register held by Registers of Scotland under the Crofting Reform (Scotland) Act 2010. The Register of Crofts is not a definitive record of title, extent or boundaries and remains incomplete; many entries reflect historic descriptions and are updated only when regulatory events occur. It covers the crofting counties of Argyll, Caithness, Inverness, Orkney, Ross and Cromarty, Shetland and Sutherland, and certain designated areas in Moray, the Isle of Arran and the Isle of Bute. Practitioners use it to confirm whether land is a croft, identify the current crofter or landlord, check common grazings, and trace assignations, decrofting, subdivisions and regulatory decisions for due diligence, conveyancing and service of notices. The term and register are specific to Scotland; there is no equivalent in England and Wales, Northern Ireland or Ireland.
