Royal Sign Manual meaning

What does Royal Sign Manual mean?
In legal practice, the Royal Sign Manual is the Sovereign’s handwritten signature used to confer the monarch’s personal approval or authority on particular Crown instruments. It commonly appears on warrants under the Royal Sign Manual which authorise the issue of letters patent (for example appointments to senior offices, the grant of honours and royal charters) and, in some cases, the affixing of the Great Seal of the Realm or the Great Seal of Scotland. The Sign Manual is distinct from the Great Seal, the Privy Seal and the Signet; it is the signature itself. Such instruments are ordinarily countersigned by the responsible minister, reflecting ministerial accountability, and are processed through the Crown Office or the Privy Council Office. The expression is recognised in UK legislation (for example, the Crown Office Act 1877 and the Regency Acts) but functions primarily as a descriptive constitutional term used across multiple contexts rather than as a single codified definition. Usage is broadly consistent across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland within the UK constitutional framework. In Ireland, the term is of historical relevance only and has no role in current constitutional or administrative practice.
