RWM Ltd denotes, in UK energy and environmental practice, the former company within the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) that led the UK programme for a geological disposal facility (GDF) for higher‑activity
radioactive waste and developed national waste management solutions. It is not a term defined in legislation; rather, it is an organisational name used across contracts, procurement, regulatory engagement and guidance. The NDA is established under the Energy Act 2004.
On 1 April 2014 the NDA’s Radioactive Waste Management Directorate became Radioactive Waste Management Limited (RWM Ltd), a wholly owned NDA
subsidiary. On 31 January 2022 RWM Ltd was integrated with LLW Repository Ltd to form Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), an NDA operating unit. The GDF programme and related waste management functions are now delivered by NWS. Legacy references to “RWM Ltd” in agreements, tenders or regulatory documents should generally be read as NWS.
Jurisdictionally, the UK Government’s “Working with Communities” GDF siting
policy applies in England and Wales. Scotland pursues long‑term, near‑surface storage and management rather than deep geological disposal. There is no current GDF siting process in Northern Ireland. RWM/NWS has no role in the Republic of Ireland, which regulates radioactive waste separately.
